Lilly Ledbetter, a steadfast advocate for equal pay, recently passed, leaving a legacy in the fight for fair wages for women. Her story is a powerful reminder of one woman's resilience in the face of injustice and her impact on a movement that continues to shape the workforce today.

Lilly Ledbetter made history by standing up against pay discrimination after discovering she was paid significantly less than her male counterparts despite nearly two decades as a supervisor at a Goodyear tire plant. Ledbetter’s lawsuit against her employer went to the Supreme Court, which ruled against her due to time limitations on reporting. Undeterred, she continued her fight, inspiring national attention and legislative change. In 2009, President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This law now protects workers from being silenced by procedural limitations, embodying Ledbetter’s legacy for fair pay.

Lilly led the charge, but it’s up to us to continue to advocate for ourselves. Here are some proactive steps women can take to increase income, secure financial futures, and advocate for fair pay in careers:

Research Industry Salaries: Know what fair pay looks like in your industry and role. Sites like Glassdoor, PayScale, and LinkedIn Salary provide reliable salary data based on job title, location, and years of experience.

Know and Articulate Your Value: Regularly document your accomplishments, skills, and organizational contributions. When it’s time for a review or negotiation, come prepared to show how your work has benefited the company.

Negotiate Early and Often: Negotiating doesn’t just happen during hiring—it’s also vital during performance reviews and promotions. Advocate for raises based on market standards and your achievements.

Invest in Continuous Learning:  Seek certifications, online courses, and workshops that align with emerging trends in your field, which can justify a higher salary.

Build and Leverage a Professional Network: A strong network can provide valuable advice, mentorship, and opportunities. Networking also keeps you visible in your industry, making transitioning into roles with better pay easier.

These steps empower you, your friends, and your family to pursue fair pay and build a stronger financial foundation, positioning you for success, stability, and future growth. Pass it on!
